Almost four years after her debut LP, Perera Elsewhere (aka Sasha Perera) is finally unveiling her sophomore album All of This. Back in February, its first glimpse “Something’s Up” suggested pop ambitions for the new record, but “Happened,” the Berlin-based artist’s second single in as many months, confirms her eclectic taste. Here, bright club melodies co-exist with darker trip-hop influences recalling Perera’s old band, the electronica trio Jahcoozi. Bold percussion opens the track, while a ticking pattern like hammers on steel serves as the metronome, taking “Happened” towards industrial territory before Elsewhere’s voice comes in. She favors the lower tones of her register to issue a sleepy admonition to an unnamed figure. Layered vocals on the chorus, synth embellishments and a brief horn segment provide some levity, but not enough to distract from the song’s weightier concerns (“Can there ever be forever/Or is it just a lie?”). “Happened” comes complete with a quirky, slightly surreal music video, the second piece of a three-part story that begins with “Something’s Up.” (It finds Perera in a garden tea party with a masked Cousin Itt lookalike called The Hilarious Monster.) . However the rest of the trilogy unfolds, the song and video are evidence enough that Elsewhere will continue following her creativity to some weird and wonderful places.
