When the Aquaplano records were first released in 2008 and 2009, emerging out of
Hardwax with little fanfare, they were distinctly out of step with the way
techno appeared to be heading. The minimal detour was reaching its logical
endpoint, and producers were returning to the 1990s for inspiration, with
Berghain and Sandwell District at the vanguard of a new techno movement. What
the Aquaplano sessions shared in common were slower BPMs and finding inspiration
in the 1990s, but there they parted ways. The influences these Italians were
drawing on were rather different, returning to tribal rhythms and ambient
textures to sketch out a much more heady, psychedelic form of techno. The
results were a perfect balance of hypnotic beats and swirling atmosphere geared
for a broken-in dancefloor or the hazy afterhours. Across these two records
Dozzy and Nuel would go a long way towards creating the template for a brand of
deep, atmospheric techno that has become much more prominent in the years since.
And while many have sought to imitate this sound, few – if any – have matched
what first emerged from the Aquaplano sessions. After only being available in a
very limited run, it is fitting that the sonic blueprints provided by Dozzy and
Nuel are now available again – and much more widely – at a time when their
influence is as strong as it has ever been.

Pye Corner Audio corner has finally completed his follow-up to the crushing
Black Mill Tapes Volumes 1&2, and unsurprisingly it’s just as faded as its
predecessor. While Volume 3 has been available for quite some time via the
mysterious producer’s Bandcamp page, this is the first time Volume 4 has ever
been heard, and marks the completion of the series that has catapulted him into
acclaim.

These two diverse full-lengths have been re-mastered and slotted together on one
record, and mark a transitional period in The Head Technician’s production
history. Eschewing the whimsical ambience of the previous chapters, there’s a
notable shift into beat-laced darkness on Volumes 3&4.

‘Electronic Rhythm Number Five’ is maybe the producer’s most obvious nod to
classic house yet with its punchy square-wave bassline and dusty disco snare.
Elsewhere, we’re treated to a slice of sizzling darkwave with ‘Inside the Wave’,
and gloomy John Carpenter-influenced rumblings with the sparse ‘Dystopian Vector
Part One’.

Black Mill Tapes Volumes 3&4 is yet another expertly crafted collection of
electronic vignettes, handled by a producer whose veteran’s touch can be heard
in each note. This is the soundtrack to the flickering neon light outside your
bedroom window, and should be approached with caution.

I believe lossless versions of music like this is almost a

Atari Teenage Riot (abbreviated ATR) is a German digital hardcore
group formed in Berlin in 1992. The name was taken from a
Portuguese Joe song entitled “Teenage Riot” from the album
“Teen-age Riot”, with the word ‘Atari’ added as an Atari ST
computer was used to create compositions. Highly political, they
fused anarchist, anti-fascist and anti-Nazi views with punk
vocals and the newly emerging techno sound called digital
hardcore, which is a term band member Alec Empire used as the
name of his record label.

AB Logic was a Belgian Eurodance project arranged and produced by
Jacko Bultinck and Peter Gillis in 1991. Its members included
rapper K-Swing (Cedric Murril) and pop music vocalist Marianne
Festraets. In 1992, they released the song “The Hitman”. The same
year, they released their self-titled debut album, which received
a positive review from Alex Henderson of Allmusic. It fared much
better on various mainland European pop charts than on the
Billboard 200 album chart. They scored two minor Billboard Hot 100
hits in 1992 with “The Hitman” (#60) and “Get Up (Move Boy Move)”
(#83). Another hit, “AB Logic” along with an accompanying music
video, appeared in the mid-1990s.

Rap purists, much like jazz purists, can be extremely protective
of their genre–they’re always fearful that people from the pop,
rock or dance worlds will corrupt their music and water it down.
But truth be told, not every commercial performer who incorporates
hip-hop elements has sinister motives; in many cases, they’re
simply acknowledging an art form they admire and respect. This
1992 debut by Belgium’s AB Logic shouldn’t be judged by hardcore
rap standards because it never pretends to be hardcore rap.
Comparable to the C&C Music Factory, Technotronic and Snap, AB
Logic uses rapping for club-minded purposes–not to chronicle the
challenges of life in the ‘hood. This CD must be judged by dance-
pop standards instead of hardcore rap standards, and from a
dance-pop standpoint, AB Logic’s first album is highly engaging.
Throughout the disc, AB Logic favors a rapping/singing contrast–
K-Swing is the aggressive rapper who handles the verses, while
Marianne is the female vocalist who sings the choruses. And
together, the two of them provide a lot of infectious grooves
(with the help of Belgian producer Peter Gillis). Anyone who spent
a lot of time listening to C&C, Snap and Technotronic in the early
’90s should have no problem getting into infectious, ultra-
energetic tracks like “Turn Up the Music,” “Get Up (Move Boy
Move)” and “The Hitman”. Most of the material is extremely
danceable, although AB Logic slows things down on “Sea of Love” (a
haunting gem that successfully combines pop-rap and Euro-pop).
Again, AB Logic’s work shouldn’t be judged by the same standards
one would apply to Public Enemy or Big Daddy Kane because that
isn’t what they’re going for. But from a club perspective, AB
Logic’s debut is among the strongest dance/rap outings of the
early 90s.

Global Underground 021: Deep Dish, Moscow is a DJ mix album in the Global
Underground series, compiled and mixed by Deep Dish in 2001. It is a
retrospective of a set they played at Club XIII. The Compilation reached #8
Top Heatseekers, #13 Top Electronic Albums, #31 Independent Albums. 021 is
also the area code of Tehran, where Sharam of Deep Dish was born. The back
