During the mid-’70s, Germany’s Kraftwerk established the sonic blueprint followed by an extraordinary number of artists in the decades to come. From the British new romantic movement to hip-hop to techno, the group’s self-described “robot pop” — hypnotically minimal, obliquely rhythmic music performed solely via electronic means — resonates in virtually every new development to impact the contemporary pop scene of the late- 20th century, and as pioneers of the electronic music form, their enduring influence cannot be overstated. Kraftwerk emerged from the same German experimental music community of the late ’60s which also spawned Can and Tangerine Dream; primary members Florian Schneider and Ralf Hütter first met as classical music students at the Dusseldorf Conservatory, originally teaming in the group Organisation and issuing a 1970 album, Tone Float, in the U.K. Schneider and Hütter soon disbanded Organisation, re-christening themselves Kraftwerk (German for “power station”), beginning work on their own studio (later dubbed Kling Klang), and immersing their music in the fledgling world of minimalist electronics; their 1971 debut, titled simply Kraftwerk 1, offered a hint of their unique aesthetic in its earliest form, already implementing innovations including Schneider’s attempts at designing homemade rhythm machines.

A series of lineup shifts followed, and at one point Hütter even left the group; however, by the release of 1972′s Kraftwerk 2, he and Schneider were again working in tandem. Recorded without a live drummer, the album’s rhythms relied solely on a drum machine, creating a distinctly robotic feel without precedent — the concept of purely technological music was, at the time, utterly alien to most musicians, as well as listeners. A series of well-received live performances followed before Kraftwerk began work on their breakthrough third LP, 1973′s Ralf and Florian; honing their many ambitions down to a few simple yet extraordinarily innovative concepts, their music began growing more and more revelatory — even their clean-cut, scientific image was in direct opposition to the dominant pop fashions of the time. Kraftwerk’s first album to be issued in the U.S., 1974′s Autobahn was an international smash; an edited single version of the epic title track was a major hit at home and abroad, and in America the previously unknown group reached the upper rungs of the pop albums chart. Performed in large part on a Moog synthesizer, Autobahn crystallized the distinctive Kraftwerk sound while making the group’s first clear overtures towards conventional pop structure and melody, establishing a permanent foothold for electronic music within the mainstream.

Kraftwerk resurfaced in 1975 with Radio-Activity, a concept album exploring the theme of radio communication; indicative of the group’s new global popularity, it was released in both German and English-language editions, the latter appearing early the following year. Train travel emerged as the subject of 1977′s Trans-Europe Express, which marked an increased movement towards seeming musical mechanization; the line became even further blurred with the follow-up, 1978′s aptly titled The Man Machine, a work almost completely bereft of human touches. By this time, the members of Kraftwerk even publicly portrayed themselves as automatons, an image solidified by tracks like “We Are the Robots.” Having reached the peak of their influence, however, the group disappeared from view, the first of many extended absences to follow; they did not return to action prior to 1981′s Computer World, a meditation on the new global dominance of technology — a society their music long ago predicted and pre-dated. After topping the British charts with the single “Computer Love,” Kraftwerk again vanished, enjoying a five-year layoff culminating in the release of 1986′s Electric Cafe. By now, however, pop music was dominated by synthesizers and drum machines, and the group’s stature flagged; but for a 1991 best-of collection titled The Mix, they remained silent during most of the decade. They finally released a new single, “Expo 2000,” in late 1999, and surprised fans by announcing tour dates. On the recording front, Kraftwerk celebrated the centennial anniversary of the Tour de France with a new version of their 1983 single “Tour de France,” and followed with a full album (Tour de France Soundtracks) in August 2003. The live record Minimum-Maximum followed in 2005.

In a career of myriad highlights ‘Nightclubbing’ remains the high water mark of Grace Jones’s imperial years with Island Records. It is indisputably the album on which her musical legacy rests, and rightly considered one of the greatest albums of all time. A sophisticated mêlée of sound, blending post-punk cool with a hot Caribbean vibe and a catwalk Studio 54 sensibility, it’s a perfect example of artist and musicians working in complete accord. It contains the all-time Grace classics in ‘Pull Up To The Bumper’, ‘Walking In The Rain’, ‘Demolition Man’ (written by Sting) and of course the Bowie / Iggy Pop-penned title track. There is magic in its every groove.

By all means a phenomenal pop album that hit number nine on the black albums chart and crossed over to penetrate the pop charts at number 32, Nightclubbing saw Grace Jones working once again with Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, and the remainder of the Compass Point team. Nightclubbing also continues Jones’ tradition of picking excellent songs to reinterpret. This time out, the Police’s “Demolition Man,” Bill Withers’ “Use Me,” and Iggy Pop’s “Nightclubbing” receive radical reinterpretations; “Nightclubbing” is glacial in both tempo and lack of warmth, while both “Use Me” and “Demolition Man” fit perfectly into Jones’ lyrical scheme. Speaking of a lyrical scheme, “Pull Up to the Bumper” (number five black singles, number two club play) is so riddled with naughty double entendres — or is it just about parallel parking? — that it renders Musique’s “In the Bush” as daring as Paul Anka’s “Puppy Love.” Drive it in between what, Grace? It’s not just lyrics that make the song stick out; jingling spirals of rhythm guitar and a simplistic, squelching, mid-tempo rhythm make the song effective, even without considering Jones’ presence. Sly & Robbie provide ideal backdrops for Jones yet again, casting a brisk but not bristly sheen over buoyant structures. Never before and never since has a precisely chipped block of ore been so seductive.

Originally a product of Britain’s new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s. One of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, they began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but gradually developed a darker, more dramatic sound that ultimately positioned them as one of the most successful alternative bands of their era.

The roots of Depeche Mode date to 1976, when Basildon, England-based keyboardists Vince Clarke and Andrew Fletcher first teamed to form the group No Romance in China. The band proved short-lived, and by 1979 Clarke had formed French Look, another duo featuring guitarist/keyboardist Martin Gore; Fletcher soon signed on, and the group rechristened itself Composition of Sound. Initially, Clarke handled vocal chores, but in 1980 singer David Gahan was brought in to complete the lineup. After one final name change to Depeche Mode, the quartet members jettisoned all instruments excluding their synthesizers, honing a slick, techno-based sound to showcase Clarke’s catchy melodies.

After building a following on the London club scene, Depeche Mode debuted in 1980 with “Photographic,” a track included on the Some Bizzare Album label compilation. After signing to Mute Records, they issued “Dreaming of Me” in early 1981; while neither the single nor its follow-up, “New Life,” caused much of a stir, their third effort, “Just Can’t Get Enough,” became a Top Ten U.K. hit, and their 1981 debut LP, Speak and Spell, was also a success. Just as Depeche Mode appeared poised for a major commercial breakthrough, however, principal songwriter Clarke abruptly exited to form Yazoo with singer Alison Moyet, leaving the group’s future in grave doubt.

As Gore grabbed the band’s songwriting reins, the remaining trio recruited keyboardist Alan Wilder to fill the technological void created by Clarke’s departure. While 1982′s A Broken Frame deviated only slightly from Depeche Mode’s earlier work, Gore’s ominous songs grew more assured and sophisticated by the time of 1983′s Construction Time Again. Some Great Reward, issued the following year, was their artistic and commercial breakthrough, as Gore’s dark, kinky preoccupations with spiritual doubt (“Blasphemous Rumours”) and psychosexual manipulation (“Master and Servant”) came to the fore; the egalitarian single “People Are People” was a major hit on both sides of the Atlantic and typified the music’s turn toward more industrial textures.

Released in 1986, the atmospheric Black Celebration continued the trend toward grim melancholy and further established the group as a commercial force; it eventually sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S., which earned it gold status. Released in 1987, Music for the Masses, featuring three Hot 100 singles in “Strangelove,” “Never Let Me Down Again,” and “Behind the Wheel,” propelled the group into the mainstream. The album would sell over a million copies in the U.S. alone. A subsequent sold-out tour yielded the 1989 double live set 101. Recorded at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, it was accompanied by a concert film directed by the legendary D.A. Pennebaker.

With the alternative music boom of the early ’90s, Depeche Mode emerged as one of the world’s most successful acts. The triple-platinum Violator, released in 1990, was a Top Ten smash that spawned the hits “Personal Jesus” (a number eight single), “Enjoy the Silence,” “Policy of Truth,” and “World in My Eyes.” Their 1993 LP Songs of Faith and Devotion — featuring a significant change in its heavy use of electric guitars — entered the charts in the number one slot. However, at the peak of its success, the group began to unravel, beginning with Wilder’s 1995 exit. Gahan attempted to take his own life and later entered a drug rehabilitation clinic to battle an addiction to heroin.

After a four-year layoff, Depeche Mode continued onward as a trio and released 1997′s Ultra, which featured the hits “Barrel of a Gun” and “It’s No Good.” A year later, the band embarked on a tour in support of its newly released hits album, The Singles 86>98. Depeche Mode played 64 shows in 18 countries for over one million fans. Each member took some considerable time off after the tour’s completion, and Depeche Mode would not regroup for another three years.

Exciter, the band’s follow-up to Ultra, was released in 2001, with the singles “Dream On” and “I Feel Loved” finding moderate success on international radio outlets. Two years later, Gahan issued his debut solo album, the dark and sultry Paper Monsters. Gore also followed suit by issuing the all-covers Counterfeit², a full-length sequel to his similarly themed 1989 EP. Each member supported his work with respective tours of the U.S. and Europe; however, the bandmembers soon resumed working together, and Playing the Angel, their 11th studio album, became a Top Ten hit upon its release in October 2005. Produced by Ben Hillier (Doves, Blur, U2, Elbow) and studded with singles like “Precious” and “John (The Revelator),” it topped the album charts in 18 countries and went multi-platinum and/or gold in 20 countries. Depeche Mode went on to play for more than two and a half million fans worldwide, and the DVD release Touring the Angel: Live in Milan (2006) captured one of the band’s greatest shows. _description.: The music of Scraps is a unique cosmic universe of
emotions, thoughts and bedroom sound. Utilising a
minimalist set up of drum machine, keyboard and synth
mixed with a life time obsession of the electronic pop
music of yesteryear allow Laura Hill’s ideas to come
alive. These are not cute brainless love songs however.
Although love is an inspiration in a lot of the songs,
the lyrics and themes mostly deal with the darker
painful side of that irrational emotion. Depth comes in
the way Hill can effortlessly blend the banal drudgery
of everyday living with the abstract and surreal.
Meditations on the sadness of a fleeting human
existence, strange attractions to machines and the
technical world, to the ever present escapist allure of
outer space and the dream world. All this set to some
of the finest and (I dare say) catchy pop music this
side of the 21st century.

Scraps is a distinctly unique artist borne directly out
of her environment.

Scraps has not gained her small but incredibly loyal
and growing cult following through media saturation,
blog hype, or a money backed promotional whirlwind. It
has been acquired through the independent and
uncompromising nature of her spirit, the authentic DIY
quality of the music, and her honest approach to
songwriting and performing. Strong releases on hometown
Brisbane record labels Bedroom Suck and Disembraining
Machine have complimented an already dense discography
of hand made, self released material.

Scraps has performed relentlessly all over Australia
and abroad to a wide variety of people alongside an
even wider variety of bands and artists. From drunken
suburban house parties, inner city generator squat
shows, art galleries, cafes and bookstores, museums,
drug fuelled nightclubs, rural raves, reputable and
disreputable pubs, to some of the biggest venues in
town as international support. The fact that Scraps can
effortlessly transcend these often starkly contrasting
spaces is a testament to the quality of her abilities
as a songwriter and performer.

Electric Oceans is a culmination of years spent lost in
the independent music wilderness. Experience has been
gained through Hill continuously pushing herself as a
musician, artist and human. Scraps is not your
typically modern spoilt rich kid flash-in-a-pan solo
synth songsmith. Tough battles have been fought and
either won or lost, both personally and creatively -
the results of which are more than evident on this
